It’s finally here! It is Oakland Pride Weekend, the weekend so many of us wait for all year. Oakland Pride holds a special place in my heart. I was lucky enough to arrive just two years before the rebirth of Oakland Pride and have loved to watch it grow each and every year. Now in it’s forth year, we have seen it flourish into a great community building event. Many of you may not know but Oakland Pride’s mission since it’s rebirth has been to donate its monies to build the first ever LGBTQ Center inside the Oakland city limits. I am excited to see the success of this year’s Oakland Pride and to learn how much has been raised in the last four years for the Oakland LGBTQ Center. We want to help make this dream happen so let’s make this year the biggest pride ever!
But before we go into the whole weekend of fantastical events going down this weekend in the YaY! I had a chance to sit down with The Memorials performing this Sunday at the Oakland Metro Opera House for the fiveTEN Music Fest and After Pride Party.
The high voltage duo of Viveca Hawkins and drummer Thomas Pridgen form the meat of the musical powerhouse band The Memorials. Pridgen, who started drumming at age 3, became the youngest student ever to earn a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston (he was 15). Pridgen formerly performed with The Mars Volta and formed his own group in December 2009, calling on friend and former Berklee College of Music student Viveca Hawkins to join him. The result is a diverse sound that combines Pridgen’s thunderous drumming with Hawkins’ versatile voice. Thomas Pridgen has been busy this summer touring and recording with Thundercat, Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg,Trash Talk, Electric Wire Hustle, Itch, The Memorials to name a few. Viveca has worked with artists such as Talib Kweli and Cee Lo Green. The Memorials are big deal with their hard-hitting, melodic and honest music. Watching them perform live inspires a rush of adrenaline that will keep you on your feet all night.
Miz Chris [MC]: Where are The Memorials from?
Viveca Hawkins [VH]: The group started here in the Bay! Thomas [Pridgen] and I grew up here in the East Bay and the rest of the guys live in Southern California.
[MC]: How were The Memorials formed?
[VH]: Thomas called me and Nick [Brewer] up one day after leaving a big gig and told us he wanted to see what we could do together. We have had many awesome musicians from the Bay and elsewhere help contribute to our sound, including Uriah Duffy, Dave Jackson, Maya Kronfeld, Jon Reshard and many others! Thru our progression we have met many obstacles and had to sacrifice but we continue to work hard at realizing our dreams.
[MC]: How long have The Memorials been together?
[VH]: We started recording in November of 2009. Then we released our debut album The Memorials soon after and started touring the U.S.! In 2012 we released Delirium and are currently working on our next album.
[VH]: I guess my most common answer is psychedelic soul/progressive rock. There are heavy riffs and complicated rhythms that are complimented by thick vocal leads and storytelling for people to actually relate to.. I really didn’t know how to approach this type of music, so I took a lot of ideas off of Thomas and Nick. It was a combination of how the music made me feel and stuff that Thomas would throw at me, like “what if you were a natural disaster?” or “what if you were God?” So, I would just elaborate on that and make a story out of it. I like to tell stories; that is the kind of songwriter I am. It may not be the most metaphorical or typical stuff you hear in most progressive or hard rock, but it definitely works as something that people can gravitate to.
[MC]: What are your musical influences?
[VH]: Everything! We grew up in church and we studied jazz and we love everything from rock to alternative to heavy metal! You can hear all the influences in our tunes.
[MC]: What can the Bay Area expect from performance on Sunday?
[VH]: We’re coming to do the same thing we do every day… try to take over the world. Seriously. We play to win every night. Come be a part of the glory. The audience can check out some of our music at thememorialsmusic.com. We aim to make music with substance and live to explore all creative aspects of this colorful world! We are looking forward to being back in the Bay and performing for the home crowd.
[MC]: We look forward to hearing The Memorials too! See you on Sunday!
