This Weekend in the YaY! Area thru Aug 18

This Weekend in the YaY! Area thru Aug 18

To say that I am excited about this weekend would be an understatement. This weekend is quite literally a weekend you don’t want to miss! A note before diving in: a few of the events this weekend happen over multiple days, so please check their websites for a full listing of events so you don’t miss a dayum thing.

So about a year ago I happened to click on a link for the Saint Harridan fundraiser on Kickstarter. I didn’t click on it because it was a fundraiser; I clicked on it because I was curious about the name Saint Harridan. When I saw Mary’s video about what she was trying to do, I was blown away by the ingenuity of the product. I had a chance to interview her this week right before the kickoff to her Saint Harridan Pop-Up Shop Tour and Gala right here in Oakland.

Miz Chris: Mary I am so excited about the pop-up and gala this weekend, tell me how you came up with this idea?

1148903_477101412386327_1395326626_nMary Going: As any butch woman or trans man knows, the average trip to the men’s department is nothing less than humiliating. Once the sales rep figures out I’m not shopping for my husband, the customer service tanks. And there’s no point in enduring that, because in the end, nothing ever fits.

Saint Harridan will live predominately online — there are lots of business-minded reasons for that — but ultimately, I didn’t want to miss out on the face-to-face experience. That’s why we’re doing the Pop-Up Shop tour. Saint Harridan has the capacity to create the most validating in-person shopping experience our customers have ever encountered. The idea that women like me can walk into a store and be the norm, be the expected customer, and find clothes that are made for us, in styles that feel right to us — I can barely believe we are about to make it happen! But that’s what our Pop-Up Shop will be: 100 percent reverence.

And of course we just had to have a Gala Event. We needed to throw a party so everyone would have a reason to get dressed up in whatever way makes them feel their best.

Saint-Harridan-SuiteMC: For people who haven’t yet heard of Saint Harridan, tell us what the company does.

MG: Saint Harridan is uprooting the assumptions of attire.

For butch women, studs, and trans men, dressing up has traditionally been a demoralizing pursuit. The styles we like just aren’t made for our bodies. So our choice is to dress up in clothes that don’t feel right to us, or to wear clothes that make us look like a kid playing in her father’s closet.

We’re changing that at Saint Harridan. We’ve reconstructed men’s-styled suits to fit the bodies of women and trans men. But we’re about more than suits. We’re about making clothes that finally give our customers the chance to look how they feel–the opportunity to dress in clothes that revere who they are, rather than 1148893_474162386013563_849439113_nemphasize who they are not.

The real revolution is that our company has re-engineered the suit, not just borrowed a man’s pattern and cut it to women’s sizes. We’re not making individual suits for individual people who happen to want something different. We’re manufacturing a line of suits that butch women and trans men can buy off the rack, just like anyone else.

MC: How did you come up with the Saint Harridan name?

MG: So here’s the thing: those of us who are attracted to Saint Harridan’s clothes use many different words to describe ourselves. Words like stud, butch or boi, among many others. Some of us feel right in the word woman, others like man, or trans, or transman. As I see it, this says something wonderful about our community. We are complex and diverse, and we are pushing the hell out of boundaries. As I considered what to name the company I wanted to find a new word that could be meaningful to those masculine-of-center without alienating anyone among us–a word that would hold our customers in the highest regard.

Among its many other definitions, a Saint can be “a founder, sponsor or patron of a movement.” As I see it, anytime one of us walks into a meeting in a jacket and tie, or down the street in a hoodie and cargoes, we are undermining the gender binary. We are leading this movement. And I think that makes us Saints.

1045167_455939407835861_563328565_nHarridan is a slur that means “mannish woman.” It’s the kind of word that’s been used to taunt women, to keep women down. I say, show me a woman who’s too much man for you, and I’ll show you a Saint. Saint Harridan.

MC: Tell us three things we don’t know about you.

MG: Okay, hmmm.
– using complex formulas in spreadsheets makes me smile.
– I can flip eggs without a spatula (a proud accomplishment),
– And I used to make and sell Psycho Bitch Hot Sauce.

MC: What are you most excited about this weekend’s events?

MG:I’m just so thrilled to meet our supporters and thank them in person. Honestly, Saint Harridan is a fabulous idea, and we’re manufacturing an extremely high quality product, but we would be nowhere without the thousands of people who have helped us get started. I have so much gratitude I’ve been waiting to pour out on everyone. This will be the weekend to do it.

The Saint Harridan Pop-Up Shop and Gala information is listed below–make sure you check it out!

About our Co-host: Celebrating 40 Years in the community!

HISTORY OF SAN FRANCISCO WOMEN AGAINST RAPE

Founded in 1973 as a 20-hour per week rape crisis hotline, San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) has survived its “crawling” years and proven capable of developing and delivering innovative crisis intervention services and social change programs for survivors of sexual assault and their communities. During the early 80’s, SFWAR expanded its services to include a 24-hour hotline and in-person counseling and support groups. From 1986-1989 with an annual budget of $60K and 3 part-time staff, SFWAR sponsored the well-attended annual Take Back the Night March and established itself as the most comprehensive feminist environment rape crisis center in San Francisco.

ABOUT QUMBIA QREW:
